The Good Shepherd?

Gosh, Tim, I wonder if you're right: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Pieter_Brueghel_II-The_good_shepherd_mg_3018.jpg for anyone who's interested.

But then, that's a wolf, and he's denying the hyena's wolfishness.

Davek (Eastern European name, or Dave K?: I thought about putting the rest of the poem in, but it seemed greedy. If I ever make contact with Burnside, I'll ask his permission.

Do post the rest of the poem!

"here is the patron beast
of all
who love the night:
waking at dusk
to anatomy's
blunt hosanna..."

Ah it is wonderful. Though I can't resist pointing out that the hyena is largely metaphorical in the poem, invoking the darkly instinctive creature lurking within us all, and so whether the precise zoological details are correct isn't too important.

Great to see the poem being discussed though!
